Civil War Reenactments have been gaining popularity over the years and have become a popular family event. Both reenactors and spectators gather at battle sites throughout the country for annual events. Some events are noteworthy for their historic significance and others for the quality of the reenactment event. History buffs, gun collectors and enthusiasts gather to reconstruct history. Some events are open and allow a wide range or participants and spectators. Other events are closed to the public and only "hard core" reenactors are invited. Here is a list of 10 great events. - Gettysburg, PA - The famous battle of Gettysburg comes to life over three days in the summer. Tickets are available on line. This is one of the premier civil war reenactment events in the country.
- New Market, VA - Travel to Shenandoah County in May and experience the Civil War Battle of New Market at the Battle Field State Historic Park. The event includes Stonewall Brigade Band Concert, Living History, Artillery Demonstrations and more. (shenandoahconnection.com)
- Lamoni, Iowa - Lamoni Civil War Days happens on Labor Day. Head to the Midwest and make your next Labor day historic. (civilwardays.org)
- Appomattox, VA - Now you can see where Lee surrendered to Grant. This living history event is held in early April. Reenactors limited.
- Fort Steilacoom, WA - Civil war enactments are not limited to the East Coast or Midwest. Fort Steilacoom's Civil War Reenactment takes place in Washington State in early May.
- McKinney, TX - Relive the Battle for Myers Landing in McKinney, Texas in November with cavalry and infantry reenactors.
- Madison County, NY - Reenactors will cover 150 acres in Madison County, New York in October. No fees are charged.
- London, KY - The Battle of Camp Wildcat comes alive near London, Kentucky in October. Pre-registration is required of all reenactors.
- Pelican, LA - Head down to Louisiana in April for the Battle of Pleasant Hill.
- Rowlesburg, WV - Reenactors can be part of the Jones-Imboden Raid in West Virgina in May when General "Grumble" Jones lead an attack on the town to destroy the vital B&O Railroad bridge.
